The recently announced Adidas 3D Printed sunglasses 3D CMPT is designed as one-pieced non-folding, using flexible nylon and a rubberised coating. Despite selling for US$415 may seems pretty high, it is only available for 150 sets to members of Adidas Creator Club only starting at 23 Aug 2021.
Adidas, in collaboration with Marcolin eye-wear, by making it a skeletal look with no infill, it has a low weight of just 20 grams. This has indeed highlighted the advantages of using 3D printing on production which traditional manufacturing may seems impossible and even at a higher cost.
As 3D printing is getting more and more popular in every industry in this decade, its path from majority in prototyping is obviously moving to end products. Many have been inspired by the possibility of the technology and it is not surprising to see more and more epic products coming out. Adidas has been very proactive on trying 3D printing on their products, such as their Futurecraft STRUNG revealed not long ago.
Tailor-made 3D printed glasses may even be feasible in the future with just a few clicks on a mobile app, combined with the availability of 3D face scan functions in our phones. You never know.
Check out Adidas Creators Club on 23 Aug 2021 for the product release.
